History of Pizza Delivery

| History | 2 July, 2012

In 1989, while King Umberto and Queen Margherita visited the city of Naples, Italy, the famous Pizzaaiolo (pizza chef), Raffaele Esposito was known to prepare and make the first ever delivery for them. When the Queen expressed her desire to taste “pizza pie”, Rafaelle personally created the pizza with the colors of the Italian flag: green basil, red tomatoes, and white mozzarella cheese in honor of her. Soon, this became the basis of American Neapolitan pizza.
Pizza delivery was launched after World War II, when American soldiers returning from Italy brought pizza, introducing the delicious European dish to many Americans. Since pizzas could easily be carried in paper boxes, they were great for delivery; After World War II, they became more accessible to Americans thanks to the rise of the automobile industry. In 1960, Dominos Pizza was established, and they popularized free pizza delivery in the United States. In Australia, a percentage of the delivery fee is credited to the driver as reimbursement for the use of his personal vehicle. By the 2000’s, more pizza companies around the world started to set a delivery fee. In some countries, it is also customary for customers to give tips to the pizza deliverer.
Popular culture reveals to us how pizza delivery has become common in our modern culture. For instance, the Australian comedy series “Pizza” features characters that work for a Sydney-based pizzeria and deliver pizzas. Tom Wolfe’s novel “I Am Charlotte Simmons” also features a memorable scene where a pizza delivery guy brings pizza to a group of college kids.
Today, pizza delivery has become more accessible than ever. You can even process your delivery orders online, through simple registration forms. Some countries have pizzerias offering 24-hour delivery service, making it the convenient choice for people who become hungry in the middle of the night, when most restaurants around are closed. Almost everyone loves a pizza, and having them delivered at home has always been pleasant for family gatherings, college parties, or just for yourself.
